Liposaction Surgery

Liposuction surgery or Lipoplasty

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures and is used to reshape your body in certain areas by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately, enhancing your self-image. However, liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise and should be looked at as an aid in improving one's shape - not the final solution.

Many people, although not overweight, have areas of fat on their bodies that is disproportionate to the rest of their figure, while many others are slightly overweight and desire to reduce multiple areas on their bodies. Still other individuals are overweight and want to drastically change their body shaping and feel that they are in control their appearance. To varying degrees liposuction can help each one of these groups.

Liposuction is mainly used to improve how a person looks, rather than providing any physical health benefits. In many cases a person could probably achieve similar results, and sometimes better ones, if they adopted a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet, regular exercise and a good night's sleep every night.

Experts say that liposuction should ideally only be used if the individual did not achieve the desired results with a lifestyle change. For example, if some obstinate areas of fat that are resistant to exercise and diet a liposuction procedure can be reccomended.

When you gain weight each fat cell increases in size and volume. Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in isolated areas. How much is removed from a specific area depends on its appearance and the volume of fat. Contour changes resulting from liposuction can be long-lasting, as long as the patient's weight does not increase.

Liposuction is only done in relatively small areas of the body, and is in no way a treatment for obesity or long-term weight loss.

Patients should discuss the pros and cons of liposuction with their practitioner before deciding on whether to proceed. If the individual still wants to go ahead, they should talk to their surgeon sincerely about why they want to have a liposuction surgery done, what they hope to personally gain from it, and what their real expectations are.

Problem areas that can be addressed with liposuction are shown here:

  • Improved Health
  • Improved Appearance
  • Fat Removal
  • Cellulite Removal

Your improved body contour will be apparent when the swelling and fluid retention commonly experienced following liposuction subside. This can take up to 4 months With continued practices of healthy diet and fitness, the loss of excess fatty tissue should be permanently maintained. However, substantial weight gain can alter an otherwise permanent result.

The following body areas are commonly targeted for liposuction treatment:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Inner knees
  • Hips
  • Flanks (love-handles)
  • Neckline and the area under the chin (submental)
  • Thighs - saddlebags (outer thighs), and inner thighs
  • Upper arms

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, meaning that the patient will not feel any pain, or any other sensations, during the procedure. Thus, a check of the patient's physical condition prior to the procedure is mandatory; the anesthesia doctor reviews the patient's medical condition to decide the best technique of anesthesia. They might also order some laboratory tests to be conducted for examination purposes.

Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions. First, sterile liquid solution is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through these incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.
