Bariatric & General Surgery

Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatrics is a branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity. The basic principle of bariatric surgery is to restrict food intake and decrease the absorption of food in the stomach and intestines.

By the time you are consider having surgical intervention for your weight problems you may have found that exercise and dieting alone has failed you and you are now either extreme and excessively obese.

Weight loss surgery can have a profound effect on a patient’s ongoing health and well-being, can help you regain your lifestyle b and can even be potentially be lifesaving. It is always important to recognise that weight loss surgery must also take into account the necessary need for you to embrace healthy eating and lifestyle changes after surgery.

Very basically, these surgery options alter the way in which your body will digest food. The digestion process begins when you put food into your mouth, chew and mixed this with saliva and other enzyme-containing secretions. The food then reaches the stomach where it is mixed with digestive juices and broken down so that nutrients and calories can be absorbed. Digestion then becomes faster as food moves into the duodenum which is the first part of the small intestine. It is here that it then mixes with bile and pancreatic juice.

Weight Loss surgery is designed to alter or interrupt this digestion process so that food is not broken down and absorbed in the usual way. A reduction in the amount of nutrients and calories absorbed enables patients to lose weight and decrease their risk for obesity-related health risks or disorders.

Your BMI is a measure of height in relation to your weight. It is used to define levels of over weight of obesity and helps determine whether bariatric intervention is required and which procedure is best for you. The higher your BMI then the higher you are to be susceptible to increased health risks type 2 diabetes, arthritis, heart and lung diseases, bone and joint degeneration, sleep obstructive apnea just to name a few.

Excess weight loss means the amount of weight that is shed before a normal BMI could be achieved. For example, a person a weight of 150kg with a height of 150cm should have an ideal weight of 50kg (BMI 23). The excess weight required to lose is 100kg.
